BRIBED
I’m not one to start my articles with a grand opening, but let me share something with you that you’ve probably never considered. I still remember the first time I learned how to cry. My mom tried to stop me by covering my mouth with her hand, but I just couldn’t stop. So, she made me an offer: if I stopped crying, she would buy me a special meal. But, as you know, baby food all tastes the same. I threw it out and, with a pout, said to her, “How could you give me the same food every day and just change the name?” My mom, clearly taken aback, replied, “How can a baby talk like that?” But then I realized – it was just a dream. How could I possibly remember something from my babyhood? How could I even think to tell you this story? I know it sounds silly, but there’s a point here: everyone can be bribed. In Indonesia, we call it suap.
Bribery is the core of manipulation, built on four toxic elements: crime, cruelty, deceit, and a sense of innocence. You can only pull it off if you’re like a robot, devoid of heart and emotion. If you don’t have these four elements, or if you're not an emotionless robot, then you’re not truly a bribe-giver or a bribe-taker. I have another story about bribery, though I hope you never follow my example.
One day, I asked my little sister to come with me to buy candy. I didn’t have any money, so I decided to take some from my mom’s wallet without her knowing. After buying the candy, we returned home, and I noticed my mom was furious. My sister, suddenly realizing where the money had come from, confronted me. In my panic, I told her, “You can have half of my candy, but promise you won’t tell Mom I took the money from her wallet.” I then ran off, but my sweet, innocent sister still told Mom everything. What a memorable moment that was.
But bribery isn’t always about money—it can involve goods or services too. I’m sure everyone has bribed someone, whether knowingly or unknowingly. The most disgusting kind of bribery isn’t just after making a mistake, but when it happens before we even realize we’re about to make one.
Both the person offering the bribe and the one accepting it are fools, but if you ask me who’s worse, it’s the one who’s bribed. They’re the true victim, manipulated in ways they may not even understand. When we watch a movie, the victim is usually the most pathetic character. No one wants to be that pathetic person.
So, the next time you face a decision, choose honesty. It’s the only way forward.
